Custom Skin Care with Atolla Skin Lab

Quarantine is still in full effect which means we are all indoors either working from home, schooling from home, working out, or stress eating. Regardless of what your fate has been that month or so, it is a stressful time for us all one way or another. We have gained new habits (whether good or bad) and a lot of times those habits show up on our skin (whether good or bad). The great thing is, there is a product out there for whatever your skin may be going through – customized just for you!

Let me tell you about my experience with Atolla – this is a company that does a series of tests to get you the perfect serum based on your specific skin’s pH, oil levels, and moisture levels. Combine that with your skin concerns (dullness, acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, etc) and they formulate a serum just for your skin’s needs.

The Skin Test

When you first sign up, they ask you a series of questions online to create a profile. This will be your check in point until you decide to no longer use the system. It holds all your info, photos, custom serum ingredients, etc. It’s my favorite part. After you fill out the online portion, it send you a skin test in the mail – you cannot get your serum without doing this test. You do a total of 6 steps in the initial test and 5 for every test after.

Steps 1-4 – The Oil + Moisture Tests

Here is where they will have you test the oil levels on your forehead and cheek. You will take the strip for Oil Test A and place it on your cheek for 20 seconds and repeat the step with Oil Test B for 20 seconds on your forehead. For each step, you take a photo of the results and upload it on your profile. You will do the same steps for the Moisture Tests with strips C and D. It’s pretty quick and effortless. You do have to do it first thing in the morning before washing your face to get an accurate reading.

Step 5- The pH Test

This part of the test let’s you know what your pH level is in your skin. Skin is naturally acidic, like hair, so it should fall between 4.5 and 5.5 on the pH scale. The 2 sticks come with a solution (in the silver packet) and you dip the stick and sit it on the skin for about 10 seconds. Then you compare the colors on the stick to the chart and voila! You know your pH level. Record this in your profile and you are good to go.

Step 6 – Figuring Out Your Base

This is the easiest part and all about preference. You will swatch each vial and see which consistency you want for your serum. That’s it! Once you figure that out, put that into the profile – that will be the consistency of every serum you get from the company.

From that point, you now have a profile. All of your information will appear there whenever you log in. It will contain the info outlined just like the photo to the right. You will also see the formula for your new serum based on all the information you provided. They even ask what products are included in your current routine to make sure it is compatible. Every month, you will do a new skin test (they send in the mail about 2 weeks after you have been using the serum) and asked a series of questions to determine if your needs changed. If anything changes, they adjust the formula. It’s truly the cutest system and my favorite custom product I have ever tried. I have no complaints about the formulas they have sent and how they have worked for my skin.

Personal Thoughts

Let me start by saying that I am a skin care and product junkie – so I have used, tried, loved, and hated many items. I know a lot about skin, ingredients, etc so my thoughts on this system comes with some heavy knowledge. With that said, here are my pros and cons:

  • Customization – the test makes it literally perfect for your skin. The amount of care that goes into making sure you have just what your skin needs is top notch.
  • Price – $40 for a CUSTOM serum with this much detail is unheard of. Truly worth the price.
  • Accuracy – they check the skin monthly because they are aware that any little thing can change the skin. This is major because for my own profile, I changed my serum every month.
  • Product Knowledge – the ingredient lists are impressive. As someone who knows ingredients and skin, I am very aware that they know just what they are doing.

  • Usage – this can be a pro or a con. The bottle lasts over a month with continual use so you will have a brand new serum when you aren’t even half way done with the initial serum. I currently have 3 serums and 2 are basically full and I am going into my 4th month.

All in all – it’s worth it and I love it. Are you familiar with Atolla? If not, will you be giving it a try? If so, do you love it like I do? Comment below and let me know how you feel about custom beauty items.
